BRING WHAT YOU’LL NEED – WE’LL COVER THE REST

When packing for your hunt, it is important for your personal comfort and enjoyment that you include the gear and personal items you’ll likely need.  With that said, we do have a couple well stocked sporting goods stores in Pierre, and will be pleased to ensure that you have an opportunity to purchase anything that you may have forgotten. Below is a list of items you’ll want to be sure to pack:

  • South Dakota Hunting License
  • Gun
  • Sunglasses/Shooting Glasses
  • Blaze Orange Cap or Vest
  • Warm, Comfortable Boots
  • Socks
  • Upland Pants/Chaps
  • Bird Carrier or  Vest
  • Long Underwear
  • Belt/Suspenders
  • Shooting Shirts
  • Game Vest or Bag
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect Repellent
  • Gloves (Warm and Cold Weather)
  • Knife or Multi-Tool
  • Camera
  • Small First Aid Kit
  • Rain Gear

Since the weather in South Dakota is often unpredictable, we recommend packing layered clothing such as light sweaters and other pull-overs to stay comfortable throughout the day.

GETTING THROUGH THE AIRPORT

To avoid issues that could impact your travel and/or result in law enforcement action, here are some of TSA’s guidelines to assist you in packing your firearms and ammunition:

  • All firearms must be declared to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process.
  • The firearm must be unloaded.
  • The firearm must be in a hard-sided container that is locked. A locked container is defined as one that completely secures the firearm from being accessed.
  • Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm.
  • Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber for a rifle or pistol and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as it follows the packing guidelines described above.
  • TSA prohibits black powder or percussion caps used with black-powder.
